A hamster comes and goes, and our lives were enriched by his presence.
I really never thought that I’d become attached, or even care for that matter.
But there you were each day, gently taking the treats from our clumsy hands.
Only biting when mistaking fingers for food (sorry Aunt Denise!).
Running with amazing endurance on that wheel night after night.
We learned that you were running 4 miles per hour, and we started doing the math…
We determined that you could have run to the kids’ school in 90 minutes!
And you would have done it (with the promise of treats at the finish line).
I remember so many funny moments.
The day we picked you out.
Our choice was you or the hamster that would “straight up bite us” (the promise of the guy at the pet store).
The night you jumped out of Trevor’s hands and we were certain that you’d broken your neck, only to see you recover and try to escape from the crazy people who were screaming and crying.
Oh, how they loved you!
Trevor has written so many stories about your life, your fur, your eyes and love for apples.
I could tell that you were never more content than when Emily was in her room.
And she slept more soundly because you were on your wheel.
I will miss you, my friend.
Our morning and evening routine were something that I could count on. And enjoy.
Your gentle nature brought about calmness and peace to a house of chaos.
I’m thankful that you were not alone, that I could be there for the final breath.
Now with tears and sadness we say goodbye.
Yet with laughter, thankfulness and memories you are part of our lives forever.
Goodbye sweet hamster!
